What are the benefits of certification?
With so many RBTs in the field today, the APM Certification and Micro-credentials are designed to help you stand out. Rather than simply showing that you’ve completed training, these credentials allow you to demonstrate increasing levels of competency in the Autism Partnership Method (APM) and a progressive approach to ABA.
Each credential is built across three levels:
Level 1: Completion of targeted training modules
Level 2: Demonstration of knowledge through a multiple-choice exam
Level 3: Demonstration of real-world competency through performance-based evaluation
This structure allows you to move beyond basic participation and clearly show what you know and what you can actually do.
For employers, families, and colleagues, APM Certification and Micro-credentials signal that you are not just trained, but competent in implementing specific procedures with quality and precision. For you, it’s a way to differentiate yourself in a crowded field and show a commitment to meaningful skill development and high-quality care.
Earning these credentials sets you apart as someone who goes beyond the minimum standard and is focused on delivering effective, evidence-based outcomes.
How was the certification developed?
A comprehensive Job Task Analysis (JTA) was conducted to identify and validate the key knowledge and skills assessed by the certification. The findings from the JTA directly informed the development of examination content, as well as candidate eligibility and recertification requirements. To ensure the certification remains current and aligned with the field, a JTA will be conducted at least every five (5) years, with additional analyses completed sooner if significant changes occur.
Following this work, the certification transitioned from its original PBAAC model to the APM Certification. During this transition, leading experts in the field were engaged to further develop and refine the training, examination processes, and overall certification structure to ensure a high standard of rigor and relevance.
How does this certification relate to other credentials?
The APM Certification and APM Micro-credentials were not created to compete with any existing certification programs; rather, they are designed to offer specialized and advanced credentials specific to autism and a progressive approach to applied behavior analysis.
What is the assessment process?
Candidates are required to successfully complete two assessments. Level 2 consists of an online multiple-choice examination completed in the candidate’s own environment. Level 3 consists of a performance-based evaluation in which the candidate submits video(s) demonstrating the implementation of behavior analytic procedures. The specific procedures demonstrated will depend on whether the candidate is pursuing the APM Certification or a particular micro-credential.
Where can I take the Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) exam?
Candidates will complete the multiple-choice examination online using their own personal computer, from any location. Scheduling instructions and access details will be provided once eligibility is confirmed.
